Which airport, and what the journey costs

Airports for Torrevieja

Torrevieja has no airport of its own, and the answer to which one to fly into is Alicante-Elche, 44 km up the coast. What makes this destination unusual is that the second-nearest airport is close enough to matter: Region de Murcia is about 60 km away, so a cheaper flight into it is worth pricing rather than dismissing. Valencia, which search results often lump in, is 230 km away and is not a serious option.

What the journey costs

Every figure here is the same one the route guide shows, read from the same record. Prices say what kind of price they are, and a coach fare charged per person is not comparable with a vehicle price without doing the arithmetic for your own group.

Other airports that can reach Torrevieja

These are further away and TransferSelect does not cover transfers from them. They are listed so the choice above can be judged against something rather than taken on trust.

  • Region de Murcia International Airport (RMU)About 60 km by road

A genuine alternative rather than a distant one: about 60 km against 44 km from Alicante. TransferSelect does not cover transfers from it, so check what a transfer costs before choosing a flight into it.

  • Valencia Airport (VLC)About 230 km by road

More than five times the distance from Alicante Airport, and over two hours of driving. Not a practical arrival airport for Torrevieja.

Why Alicante rather than Murcia

Distance is only half of it. Alicante-Elche is the busier airport by a wide margin, so it carries more routes, more frequencies and more competition on fares, and it has the transfer infrastructure that follows from that: a non-stop coach to Torrevieja, a taxi rank working to a regulated tariff, and transfer operators who cover the route as a matter of course. Region de Murcia is 16 km further and much quieter. If a flight into it saves you real money the drive is not a reason to refuse, but check what the transfer costs before you book, because the cheap and frequent options that exist from Alicante do not all have an equivalent there. We do not cover transfers from Murcia, so we cannot tell you what one costs.

The last 44 km are not motorway

The road to Torrevieja leaves the airport on the N-338 and joins the N-332, the coastal trunk road, rather than the AP-7. It is a single carriageway for much of the way and it runs through Guardamar and the ribbon of development along the coast. Two routing engines put the free-flowing drive at 45 to 50 minutes, which is a floor rather than a typical time: in July and August, and on summer weekends, this corridor is exactly the sort of road that adds twenty minutes without warning. Plan the drive as an hour and you will rarely be wrong, which is also what the coach operator schedules.

The town is long, so where you are staying matters

Torrevieja stretches several kilometres along the coast, from La Mata in the north down past the marina and on towards Punta Prima and the urbanisations beyond. The coach sets down in one place, the bus station on Calle del Mar, close to the centre and the port. If you are staying near there, that is the whole journey. If you are booked into one of the urbanisations at either end, the coach leaves you a taxi ride short of the door, and that last leg is what usually decides whether the cheap option was actually the cheap one.

Alicante, by about 16 km. Alicante-Elche is 44 km by road and Region de Murcia is about 60 km, measured to the town centre with two independent routing engines.

Can I fly to Valencia for Torrevieja?

You can, but it is about 230 km and over two hours of driving each way. It is not a practical arrival airport for Torrevieja unless the fare difference is very large indeed.

How do I get from the airport to Torrevieja without a car?
