Why the name has two cities in it
The airport serves Alicante but stands in the neighbouring municipality of Elche, which is where the name comes from and which has a practical consequence for anyone taking a taxi. A journey from the terminal to the city crosses a municipal boundary, so it is charged on the Generalitat's interurban tariff with a fixed airport supplement rather than on Alicante's urban meter. That is why a thirteen-kilometre ride has a published maximum of around 21 to 30 EUR rather than a city fare.
The alternatives, and what they would cost you
Region de Murcia is about 105 km away and Valencia about 185. Both are more than an hour of driving to reach a city with an airport thirteen kilometres from its own centre, and the second is closer to two. A fare into either would have to be dramatically lower to survive the transfer that follows. We do not cover transfers from either airport. The Murcia figure is unusually solid, incidentally: our two routing engines agreed to within a kilometre over more than a hundred, which they rarely do.
Getting into the city
This is the one destination on this site where public transport is the first answer rather than the cheap one. Line C-6 runs between the terminal and the centre every day of the year, calls at the railway station, and meets the Metropolitan Tram at Alfonso X El Sabio and Plaza de los Luceros, which is the connection that makes the rest of this coast reachable without a car. We have not been able to verify its fare or its frequency from the operator and do not print either.

Because it stands in the municipality of Elche rather than in Alicante. That is not only a naming matter: a taxi from the terminal into Alicante crosses a municipal boundary, so it runs on the interurban tariff with an airport supplement instead of a city meter.
How far is Alicante airport from the city centre?
About 13 km. The number is a midpoint, because the direct road up the Avenida de Elche measures about 12 km and the A-70 motorway about 15. It is the only route we cover where the shorter way and the quicker way are different roads.
Is there public transport from the airport into Alicante?
Yes, and it is better than on any other route here. Line C-6 runs to the centre every day of the year from a stop on the departures roadway, calls at the railway station, and connects with the tram at two central stops. We have not verified its fare or frequency and will not print figures we cannot stand behind.
