Malaga-Costa del Sol is about 16 km from the city centre and it is the best-connected airport this site covers. The Cercanias C1 leaves from a platform at the airport and reaches the centre in a published twelve minutes, calling at Maria Zambrano, where the high-speed trains go from, after eight. The express bus costs 4 EUR, a figure the airport operator prints rather than links to. The regulated taxi is 17 to 27 EUR for the vehicle.

Which transfer should you choose?

On almost every route this site covers we can verify that a public service exists and not what it costs. Here both are published, and that changes the shape of the advice: a train at twelve minutes and a bus at four euros are not the budget compromise, they are simply the fastest and the cheapest ways in. The taxi earns its money on luggage, on a party of four, and on the hours when neither is running.

You are catching a high-speed train onward

Train

The C1 calls at Maria Zambrano in a published eight minutes from the airport, and that is where the AVE services leave from. No taxi at either end and no change on the way.

You are travelling light and staying central

Train

Twelve minutes into the centre from a platform at the airport, which is quicker than either of our two measured drive times. The train is not the compromise on this route, it is the fast option.

Bus

Four euros for a single, luggage free, payable on board by card or cash, and the airport operator prints the figure rather than linking to it. That is the cheapest verified fare anywhere on this site.

Taxi

The regulated fare is for the vehicle, so 17 to 27 EUR split four ways is close to four bus fares and it ends at your door. Luggage adds 0.56 EUR a piece rather than a problem on a platform.

With a train at twelve minutes, a bus at four euros and a taxi capped near twenty-seven, a pre-booked transfer has the narrowest case here of anywhere in this cluster. It is a party too big for one car, an arrival at an hour when neither service is running, or somebody who simply wants a name held up in arrivals. We do not show a bookable transfer for this route: the products the search returns are either for somewhere else or sold as one listing covering several destinations at once, where the price a reader would see is not necessarily this journey's.

The rank is at arrivals and needs no booking. This route sits on the edge of the regulated minimum in a way none of the others does: Fare 4 over 15.88 km meters at 17.67 EUR against a 17.37 EUR floor, clearing it by thirty cents. A kilometre closer and the minimum would decide the fare instead of the meter. In the dearest band it is about 27 EUR. Luggage is 0.56 EUR a piece, and no supplement is charged leaving the airport, though 6.27 EUR is added coming back to it.

How the fare is set
Regulated fare bands published by the airport operator for journeys originating at the airport, not a meter left to itself. Fare 4 applies Monday to Friday on working days from 06:00 to 22:00: 1.79 EUR flag drop plus 1.00 EUR per kilometre, with a 17.37 EUR minimum. Fare 9, the dearest band, applies on Fridays and the eve of public holidays from 22:00, on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays outside daytime hours, and during the August Fair and Easter Week: 2.50 EUR plus 1.38 EUR per kilometre, with a 24.93 EUR minimum. A middle band, Fare 5, covers ordinary nights and weekend daytimes at 2.19 EUR plus 1.21 EUR. Luggage is charged at 0.56 EUR a piece in the boot and is not included below. No airport supplement is charged on journeys leaving the airport; 6.27 EUR is charged on journeys to it.

The Cercanias C1 terminates at Malaga Centro Alameda and calls at the airport's own station on the way. The airport operator publishes twelve minutes to the centre and eight to Maria Zambrano, which is where the high-speed trains to Madrid, Cordoba and Seville leave from, so a connection onward needs no taxi at either end. Both figures are given as published rather than turned into ranges. The fare is the one thing Aena links to rather than prints, so we say nothing about it.

The express line runs between the terminal and the centre of Malaga, boarding on floor 0 at arrivals. The airport operator states the fare outright: a single ticket costs 4 EUR, luggage is carried free, and tickets are sold on board by card or in cash. Across every route on this site that is the only public transport fare a primary source prints instead of linking to. How often it runs is behind that link, so we do not claim a frequency.

Going back: Malaga to Malaga Airport

  • The road

16 km, 20–35 min. Measured on the road, so unchanged either way.

  • The taxi

Same Ayuntamiento de Malaga, as published by Aena rates per kilometre, and no supplement is charged on the journey out, so the metered sum is the same either way: €17 on the cheaper band and €27 on the dearer. What we cannot tell you is whether a supplement applies to a journey ending at the terminal, which some authorities charge and this one may. Treat these as the fare before any such charge.

  • Where the coach leaves from

EMT Malaga sets down at Malaga city centre. That is where you board going back.

Departure times from Malaga are not verified. The times on this page are departures from the airport, and reading them backwards would invent a timetable.

How we worked out the taxi fare

What the regulated fare is made of

A taxi from this airport does not run on a meter. The fare follows a schedule published by the Ayuntamiento de Malaga, as published by Aena, so it can be worked out in advance rather than quoted. These are the maximums that schedule allows over the measured distance, not a price anyone has offered you.

What each traveller pays

The taxi fare is for the vehicle, so its cost per head falls as the party grows. A coach seat does not. Even split four ways the taxi is €4.25 a head against €4, so on price the coach stays cheaper at every party size on this axis.

The taxi line is the floor of the regulated range, the daytime fare over the shorter measured distance, so it is the most favourable figure the taxi can honestly be given. Price is not the only question: the coach takes longer and does not go to your door.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a train from Malaga Airport into the city?

Yes, from the airport's own platform. The Cercanias C1 reaches Malaga centre in a published twelve minutes and Maria Zambrano, the high-speed station, in eight.

How much is the bus from Malaga Airport to the centre?

4 EUR for a single, with luggage carried free and tickets sold on board by card or in cash. The airport operator publishes that figure directly, which is unusual: on every other route we cover the fare is behind a link and we leave it blank.

How much is a taxi from Malaga Airport to the city centre?

About 17 to 27 EUR for the vehicle, not per person. The lower figure only just clears the regulated 17.37 EUR minimum, by thirty cents, so on a slightly shorter run the minimum would be the fare instead.

How far is the airport from Malaga city centre?

About 16 km by road. Our two routing engines returned 15.88 and 17.28 kilometres, differing about which approach into the centre to take.

What is the quickest way into Malaga from the airport?

The train, on the published times. Twelve minutes beats both of our measured free-flow drive times of twenty-two and thirty-seven minutes, and it does not sit in traffic.

How do I get from Malaga back to the airport?

The C1 runs both ways from the same stations and the express bus runs both ways too. By taxi the distance is unchanged, but Malaga charges a 6.27 EUR supplement on journeys to the airport that the outward leg does not carry.
