Santa Pola is 14 km down the coast from Alicante-Elche airport, which makes this the shortest transfer on this site by a long way: fifteen to twenty minutes of free-flowing road on the N-338 and the N-332. That distance changes the arithmetic rather than just shrinking it. The regulated taxi comes to 25 to 30 EUR for the whole vehicle, so for two or more people it beats anything sold per seat, and the usual argument for booking ahead, that a long transfer is worth fixing in advance, has much less to lean on over twenty minutes.

Which transfer should you choose?

On most routes the interesting question is what a long drive costs. Here it is what a short one costs, and the answer is dominated by charges that do not scale with distance. The 4.25 EUR airport supplement and the 1.65 EUR pick-up together are almost six euros of a fare that starts at about twenty-five, which is close to a quarter of it before the taxi has moved. That is why the fare barely changes between the town centre and the far end of the Platja de Llevant, and why splitting a vehicle is decisive here in a way it is not on a longer route.

There are two or more of you

Taxi

The regulated fare is for the vehicle, not per head. At 25 to 30 EUR it is already close to what two seats on anything sold per person would cost, and every additional passenger makes the gap wider. Over fourteen kilometres there is no long drive for a cheaper per-seat option to win back.

Taxi

The special tariff applies from 21:00 to 07:00 on working days including Saturday, and all day on Sundays and holidays. It lifts the fare by roughly five euros on this route rather than the twenty-odd it adds on a long one, because most of the increase is charged per kilometre. The rank needs no booking, which matters more than the surcharge.

Bus

The Vectalia line calls at the airport on its way to Santa Pola and needs no change. We have not been able to verify its fare or its timetable from the operator, so treat it as an option to ask about at the stop rather than one to plan around. If it is not running when you land, the taxi is twenty minutes and a known maximum.

This is the case where booking ahead still earns its keep on a short route: a vehicle sized for the group, waiting, with nothing to arrange after a flight. Weigh it against the rank, which is a few metres from the door and charges a capped fare, and decide whether the certainty is worth the difference.

A private transfer is arranged in advance and the driver meets you in arrivals. On a long route that certainty is worth paying for. On this one the case is thinner: the rank is a few metres from the door, the journey is twenty minutes, and the regulated taxi fare is already a capped and knowable number rather than an open meter. It still makes sense for a family with a lot of luggage, for a late landing, or where a fixed price booked at home is simply easier than sorting anything out on arrival. One product is bookable for this route. Fourteen were assessed and thirteen were rejected, most of them boat trips to Tabarca island or guided tours that happen to name Santa Pola, and one because it sells the journey in the opposite direction. It is 80 to 100.53 EUR for the vehicle, recently checked at Viator rather than quoted live, which is more than the regulated taxi fare for the same twenty minutes.

The rank is on the arrivals roadway and needs no booking, which on a twenty-minute journey is most of the argument. The fare is not negotiated: Santa Pola is outside Elche, so the Generalitat's official interurban tariff governs it, with a fixed airport supplement on top. Working the published maximums over the measured distance gives about 25 EUR by day and about 30 EUR at night, on Sundays and on holidays. Those are ceilings the tariff allows rather than a price anyone has quoted us. Two things are worth knowing before you get in. The published rates are maximums, so a meter can read lower but not higher. And the night and Sunday tariff, which runs from 21:00 to 07:00 on working days including Saturday and all day on Sundays and holidays, is a smaller penalty here than on a long route, because most of the difference is per kilometre and there are only fourteen of them.

Official regulated tariff rather than a meter-free negotiated price. Santa Pola is outside Elche, so the Generalitat's interurban schedule applies: 1.65 EUR pick-up plus 1.34 EUR per km on the ordinary tariff, and 2.25 EUR plus 1.55 EUR per km on the special tariff, which covers 21:00 to 07:00 on working days including Saturday, and all day on Sundays and holidays. The airport supplement is added on top. Published amounts are maximums.

Aena lists a Vectalia service under the name Santa Pola-Airport-San Vicente del Raspeig, boarding at the bus stop on the departures roadway. The airport sits in the middle of that line, so it reaches Santa Pola without a change. That the service exists, who runs it, where it boards and that it goes to Santa Pola directly are verified from the airport operator's own list. Its fare, its first and last departures, how often it runs and on which days are not. The operator's own page for the line refuses our requests, and the only timetable we could retrieve is a municipal tourism copy valid from February 2019, a winter schedule tied to the university term. A seven-year-old copy of somebody else's timetable is not a source, so we are not going to print times or a fare from it. What that leaves is a real option we cannot yet describe: if you are travelling light and alone, it is worth asking at the stop, and it is worth knowing that this is a local bus rather than an airport coach.

Going back: Santa Pola to Alicante Airport

  • The road

14 km, 15–20 min. Measured on the road, so unchanged either way.

  • The taxi

Same Generalitat Valenciana rates per kilometre. What we cannot carry over is the €4.25 airport supplement, which our figure records for a journey that starts at the terminal; nothing we hold says how it is treated on one that ends there. Without it: €20 by day, €26 at night and on Sundays. A floor, not an answer.

  • Where the coach leaves from

Vectalia sets down at Santa Pola bus station. That is where you board going back.

Departure times from Santa Pola are not verified. The times on this page are departures from the airport, and reading them backwards would invent a timetable.

How we worked out the taxi fare

What the regulated fare is made of

A taxi from this airport does not run on a meter. The fare follows a schedule published by the Generalitat Valenciana, so it can be worked out in advance rather than quoted. These are the maximums that schedule allows over the measured distance, not a price anyone has offered you.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Santa Pola from Alicante Airport?

About 14 km by road, and it is the shortest route this site covers. Two independent routing engines were run to three aiming points in the town, the centre, the port and the Platja de Llevant. All six measurements fall within 720 metres of each other, and at the town centre the two engines agree to within 50 metres, which is the closest agreement on any route here.

How much is a taxi from Alicante Airport to Santa Pola?

Between about 25 and 30 EUR for the vehicle, not per person. That is the maximum the Generalitat's official interurban tariff allows over the measured distance, including the 4.25 EUR airport supplement, with the upper figure applying at night, on Sundays and on holidays. It is a ceiling rather than a quote: the published rates are maximums, so a meter can read lower.

Why is the taxi fare so high for such a short journey?

Because two of the charges do not shrink with the distance. The 4.25 EUR airport supplement and the 1.65 EUR pick-up are fixed, and together they are close to a quarter of a fare that starts around twenty-five euros. Over fourteen kilometres the per-kilometre part has little room to dominate, which is also why the fare barely moves between the town centre and the far end of the beach.

Is there a bus from Alicante Airport to Santa Pola?

Yes. Aena lists a Vectalia service running Santa Pola to San Vicente del Raspeig by way of the airport, boarding at the stop on the departures roadway, so it reaches Santa Pola without a change. We have not been able to verify its fare or its timetable: the operator's own page refuses our requests and the only schedule we could retrieve dates from 2019. We are not going to print times we cannot stand behind.

How do I get from Santa Pola back to Alicante Airport?

The same road and the same distance, so the driving time is unchanged. The taxi tariff per kilometre is the same in both directions, but the airport supplement in our figure is recorded for a journey that starts at the terminal and we cannot say how it is treated on one that ends there, so the return fare is the same sum minus a component we will not vouch for. The Vectalia line runs both ways by definition, since it is named for both ends, but the departure times from Santa Pola are not verified either.

Should I book a transfer in advance for Santa Pola?

Less obviously than for a long route. The taxi rank is a few metres from arrivals, the journey is twenty minutes and the fare is capped by a published tariff rather than left to a meter. Booking ahead still helps with children, with a lot of luggage, or when you want nothing left to arrange. One private transfer is bookable for this route if you decide it is worth it.
