The number that is wrong by thirty kilometres

Almost every figure you will read for this journey is seventy kilometres, and it is a real number measured from the wrong place. Split city to Makarska along the coast is about that. The airport is twenty-five kilometres west of Split, so a transfer starts further away rather than nearer, and both of our routing engines put the drive at ninety-eight to a hundred and one.

Motorway and a mountain pass, not the coast road

Both engines take the same way and it is not the scenic one: the D8 east, the D1 up to the motorway, forty-seven kilometres of tolled A1 inland to the Zagvozd exit, then the D76 over the Biokovo pass and down to the sea. The coastal Magistrala is slower and longer from this direction. The descent is where the two engines disagree most about time, which is what a mountain road does to a speed model.

A riviera is not a town

Several transfer products sell "Makarska Riviera", which is a fifty-kilometre stretch of coast holding Brela, Baška Voda, Tučepi and Podgora as well as Makarska itself. One price across that is one price across journeys that differ by half an hour, so we do not use those. The figure here comes from the single supplier that names the town, and nothing corroborates it.
